When your child or children begins studying martial arts, it is important to make sure that they have the right martial arts shoes. Protective gear for the feet is essential for proper safety, and most types are made of lightweight material that is designed to provide flexibility and traction.

Most sparring moves involve striking with the top of the foot, which is why sparring boots are made with foam like material to provide cushion for the feet and ankle joints, which the most commonly injured bones during martial arts exercise. Most of these shoes also extend over the top of the foot to provide ultimate protection. Childrens feet are constantly growing, so it may be tempting to purchase lesser quality gear. This is one area where you should splurge, for the very reason. Growing feet need support, particularly developing tendons and bones.

Shoes that are too small can cause corns, calluses, and blisters, and can result in impact related injury, since they essentially restrict the movement of the feet. Combine this with the high impact nature of martial arts sparring moves, and it is easy to see why shoes that are too small are a major cause of sparring related injury. Conversely, shoes that are too big can result in blisters and injuries related to slipping and falling during a practice or match. This is not the time to purchase shoes for your children to grow into.

You can find martial arts shoes for children in a wide variety of colors and styles, the most common being black, dark blue, red, white, and pink. Depending on the skill level of your child and the preferences of the instructor, the choice of shoes may be more or less limited. If cost is a factor, you may want to consider purchasing a high quality used pair. Make sure to let your child or children try on the shoes before you purchase them, even if you are sure of their size, since sizing standards vary widely by manufacturer.

The most important thing to remember is that the right pair of shoes, like the other martial arts accessories are designed to protect your little one while they perfect their martial arts skills. Look for shoes that are well constructed, flexible, durable, and that fit your child well and your child will be ready to begin learning martial arts sparring moves, the safe way.

1. Location

The key to learning any martial art is practice. To make this easy for you, look for a school near your home, work or school. The easier it is for you to get there, the more time you’ll spend practicing and the better you’ll get. Eliminate those “Well, it’s kind of a long ways away, so I’ll just watch TV tonight” excuses.

Note to husbands: Watch out for schools located in malls as they give you wife an excuse to shop while your kids are in class! (The location of a school says nothing about how “good” it is…give every school a fair evaluation while you’re checking them out.)

2. Instructor

You want to be sure that you get along well with your instructor, especially if you’re going to commit to a school for a period of time. Keep in mind that a martial arts instructor is just like any teacher or coach that you have had, their job is to teach you the art and help you improve. Pay special attention to their personality, philosophy, energy, motivation and how they treat other students. If you’re having a difficult time making a decision, go with your gut feeling…this is a decision that has to be right for you. Remember, selecting an instructor is not a life-long decision so don’t take too long to make a decision. Get started, learn about the arts and change instructors later on if you feel it’s in your best interest.

3. Style

You want to be sure the schools you’re looking at offer styles that will help you accomplish your goals. If your goal is meditation, you probably don’t belong in a jujitsu school. But don’t get too picky either. Just because you always wanted to be like Bruce Lee doesn’t mean you have to practice Wushu. Many martial artists train in different arts through their career and end up creating a style that is a combination of all their styles.

Again, this isn’t a permanent decision so it’s better to just get started with a school nearby that has an instructor you like.

4. Costs

Look for schools that offers 1-2 introductory classes for free. These benefit both you and the school by ensuring you’re a good fit before making you commit to anything.

If you’re going to invest in a “martial arts education”, make sure it’s within your budget. You don’t want you or your kids to get started and become excited about martial arts, just to have to quit due to finances.

Some schools require contracts (or “tuitional agreements” as they are often called) while others don’t. Don’t be afraid of tuitional agreements, often times these schools are extremely interested in seeing you or your child succeed, which is why they want you to make a longer-term commitment after a free class or two. There are also excellent instructors who don’t want to see money interfere with a martial arts education, so they opt to not require contracts and charge on a per-class basis.

Both contract and no-contract schools are good options, just be sure to give location and instructors more weight than payment structure when making a decision to commit to a school.

You paid good money to join a health club and what did you get in return? Having to put your name on a sign-in sheet just to use the cardio machines, televisions blasting, cleaning up sweat off of some piece of equipment because the person who previously used it didn’t have the courtesy to wipe it down. A singles club atmosphere complete with uninvited attention, waiting to use the free weights because some clown is spending way too much time primping in front of the mirror? This is hardly a refuge for most busy men and women looking to get fit!

Have you ever considered the martial arts alternative? Many adults are disgusted with the run-of-the-mill fitness centers and have looked to the martial arts as a way to get into shape. Martial art training can provide you with all the benefits of physical exercise without the circus-type atmosphere of the average health club.

The traditional martial arts curriculum is designed to develop your overall fitness level. Classes always include some flexibility training in the form of stretching exercises. The various movements and techniques that you practice during class help develop your cardiovascular health, as well as stamina and focus. The modern martial arts instructor welcomes students who are looking for a fitness alternative and has gone out of his or her way to incorporate strength training either with lightweights and/ or resistance exercises.

A martial arts workout has more benefits to offer then a gym workout. In the gym your pretty much limited to working on strength and endurance (cardio). In a martial arts workout you get not only strength and endurance, you also receive flexibility, balance, coordination, body unity, alignment, hand eye coordination. Plus your body can get used to a gym workout very quickly, which means our progress will level off. Martial arts constantly makes your body guess what’s next which will keep it moving towards higher levels of fitness,

When you go to a gym, you may get a few sessions with a personal trainer as part of your membership package. Once that’s finished, you’re basically on your own unless you want to pay for more sessions. What’s nice about martial art training is that as you advance through the curriculum through some type of belt or sash grading system, more is expected of you physically. By following the curriculum laid out by your instructor, you progress to higher levels of fitness. In the meantime, you are learning to defend yourself!

Martial arts classes are also fun! Working through the various levels in the style you have chosen is both challenging and exciting. You’ll have a sense of pride and accomplishment that you’ll never get jogging aimlessly on some treadmill!

So you have checked out all the karate videos and would like to advance.

Has the martial arts bug been bothering you for some time now?

If you wish to study karate in depth, your primary objective is to join your local karate course so that you can master the basics correctly.

Without some previous form of karate or karate experience, you will find it very challenging to master the advanced karate steps and techniques that will allow you to grow and develop as a martial arts student.

Whether your rationale in learning martial arts is for self-defense or to compete in tournaments, joining a respected karate course is a vital first step. The most difficult part of this process is choosing the right karate academy as this will determine the result of your martial arts training. It would be a waste to spend hours of training without even mastering the basics.

Here are some tips and general guidelines that should be considered when choosing a good karate school.

One. Proximity. Choose a karate school that is relatively close to your home if possible. If you drive, try to keep this within a half hour. If your shosen course is close, it will be a lot easier to maintain a long-term training program. However this is not a rule. Feel free to choose any course that meets the criteria. You should never sacrifice the quality of your karate training for the convenience of having class within walking distance.

Two. When selecting a martial arts classes, ensure that the program is congruent with your goals. As an example, if your objective is competition and tournaments, it makes very little sense to get involved with a self-defense specialist. Although any karate training will be of great help to your overall development, targeting your goals directly is certainly one of the fastest way to achieve them.

Three. Make sure that your chosen karate school has been in operation for some time and that your intructor has enough background in teaching martial arts. Do some research about the lessons before making a final decision. There are plenty of karate schools in New York, a lot of them close down after the first couple years of operation. If you wish to master the art of martial arts, than select your instructor carefully.

Four. Don’t sweat the small stuff. It is no big deal if you do if you don’t have all of your martial arts gear ready for your first day of training. This acutally works out because ideally, you want to collect your gear little by little as this will allow you to get used to it a gradual pace. Also, it is easier to make adjustments as you are just beginning.

Five. Get all your questions answered. One of the smartest things you can do before joining a martial arts course in New York is to prepare a list of questions specific to the training you would like to have. This can be as small mental note or basic outline. Remember, this is about your martial arts training. It is not a time to be timid as you will be paying for this education, And not just with money.

Take your research to the Internet to make sure that you have covered all the bases. Stay focused and consistent and you are well on your way to mastering the art of Karate.

Before you begin to shop for the right martial arts equipment, and before you take that first step inside of the dojo, it is important to choose a martial arts style. All martial arts styles are not created equally and the best style for one person may be the worst for someone else.

There are several main style categories to consider, ground fighting or grappling, stand up, weapons based styles, throwing styles, and low impact styles. Stand up fighting styles, including Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Boxing, Kickboxing, and related styles. These types of martial arts are the most popular, and require specific martial arts equipment, depending on the specialization. If you are just beginning your martial

Ground fighting or grappling styles focus on wrestling related combat, and include Greco Roman wrestling, Sambo, Brazilian Jujitsu, and others. Of these, Brazilian Jujitsu is the most prolific in martial arts circles, and was developed into the form known today by the Gracie family, who were also responsible for developing the vale tudo combat matches that were the precursor to today’s MMA competitions.

Throwing martial arts styles are characterized by standing positions that make use of locks, trips and other techniques with the goal of throwing an opponent off balance. Styles in this category include, but are not limited to, Akidio, Judo, Shuai Jiao, and Hapkido. Martial arts equipment required for these styles consists of specially designed gis or uniforms, which are typically heavier than those used for karate and other ground fighting styles, and floor mats.

Low impact martial arts styles include Tai Chi, Ba Gua, and Chi Gong. While these styles were originally developed for combat, today, they are primarily focused on well being, stress relief, and low impact exercise. Tai Chi in particular emphasizes consistent movement, breathing, relaxing, and fitness techniques.

Weapons based martial arts focus on the use of one or more weapons and include, Kali, Iado, and Kendo. Kendo, translated literally as the way of the sword has been practiced since 1185 AD. Martial arts equipment for kendo includes protective armor known as bogu, a shinai, or practice sword, and a bokken, or wooden sword, for serious combat.

Regardless of the martial arts style you choose, be sure to practice safely, using proper martial arts equipment and the techniques learned during your lessons. Remember that martial arts is a mental as well as a physical discipline, and that it should only be used in self defense when it is absolutely necessary. With a little patience and a lot of practice, you will be on your way to becoming a martial arts master.

Choosing the Best Martial Arts Style

For anyone who wants to learn a martial art, there is a lot to know in regards to the many different styles. Of course there is the question of finding the best martial art, which is a question a lot of people ask with so many martial arts styles to choose from, it can be very complicated to pick one to learn.

No matter what you may hear or what others have to say, it is quite impossible to name one style of martial arts as the ultimate best. Actually, there are several factors that come into play,Even though one style may beat another in a competition or a fight it doesn’t always mean that the winning style is the best.

Before deciding to rush out there and learn a martial art, there are several things that you should decide first. Martial arts are great to learn, no matter which style you decide on. A martial art can teach you self discipline, self defence, and several other traits that will help you no matter where you decide to go in life.

Self defence

All over the world, there are several martial arts schools and dojo’s that emphasize self defence a lot more than others. Schools that focus on kata, forms, or light sparring are less than likely to teach you what you need to protect yourself on the street. If you are looking for street self defence, then you’ll want a style that trains hard and doesn’t let up.

Fitness

Even though martial arts can improve your fitness level, it isn’t the goal behind a lot of the martial arts styles. Several styles, such as Tae Bo, are based purely on martial arts and don’t include a lot of physical fitness training. If you are looking for fitness as your main goal, then you should be looking into something other than martial arts.

Fighting ability

This will vary among the many different martial arts styles. Self defence schools will most often take advantage of fighting skills, teaching you everything you need to survive. Most martial arts styles are slow in theory, teaching you kata, movements, and forms. Self defence schools on the other hand, teach you how to inflict the most amounts of damage in the least amount of time.

Competition

Competition based martial arts are all about winning trophies and showing the world your style of martial arts. The competition that you have chosen, will greatly impact your style of martial arts. You’ll need to decide if you will be fighting or showcasing display kata, light or heavy contact, or focusing on grappling or striking.

Before you decide on a martial arts style, you should always research the schools and dojo’s in your area and see what they offer. The best schools will allow you to participate in a few free classes, or offer you discounts on your first few months. They will answer any questions that you have, and work with you to help you learn as much as you can.

Martial arts can be a very fun and exciting learning experience. There are hundreds of different martial arts styles out there, although you may be limited in choice, depending on what all is offered in your area. Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, and Jiu-Jitsu and some of the most common types of martial arts, and normally offered just about everywhere. The more distinct styles, such as Kung Fu, Shoot fighting, Kenpo, and Shaolin styles are a bit harder to find.
