Most self-defense and martial arts instructors avoid the emotions altogether. Others limit their focus on a gross over-simplification of emotional response during an attack situation. But, beyond being scared or angry, what role do the emotions play in handling a potentially deadly situation?

Did you ever wonder about that?

Aside from being reactions to the moment-to-moment occurances as we go through our days, what role do your emotions play. For most of us, it’s kind of like your blood type. Apart from knowing what it is so we don’t get the wrong type if we need to have a transfusion, it just like emotions are just things that we “have” and have no control over.

In reality, your emotions are actually tied to our body’s own natural, human, defense system. It’s true. Your body is already hard-wired for self-defense from birth.

The thing is that, our sophisticated brains, socialization, and cultural, academic, and familial education has almost made us completely clueless that we have these abilities and functions.

So, what is the function of your emotions, and how can they help us in our defense? Good question.

It’s not the focus of this article to go into all of the inner workings of your human brain. Let’s just start with some very simple responses to stimuli from the world around us.

You see, everything that we’re exposed to, causes a feeling, or response at a base, primitive level. This happens without us being conscious of it, and also happens below the level of what we normally call our emotions.

These base “feelings” or responses can be generally identified as feelings of:

  • Attraction - we’re drawn to it
  • Aversion - we don’t like it, or…
  • Apathy - we don’t care either way

Don’t confuse these primitive feelings with higher, more complicated emotional moods like:

  • Love
  • Hate, and…
  • Ignorance

They are much simpler and tied not to the higher brain functions, but actually come from your primitive “reptilian” brain – also known as the R-complex – the part of your brain that’s primarily concerned with self-preservation activities like eating, procreating, and not-dying.

“Why,” you may ask, “do I want to know all this scientific mumbo-jumbo? All I want to do is pick up some moves to protect myself?”

And I would answer, “you don’t have to learn anything.”

Not if you just want to learn those “moves” and then hope that you’ll be able to use them in a real combat situation.

Here’s the thing. When you’re training in your martial arts or self-defense class, you’re in a differnt state – pumped up, happy, having a good time. Yes?

Looking at the base feelings I described a minute ago, that would mean you were in “attraction” mode, where you like what you’re doing and want more of it. The activity – the training – it feels good and, while perhaps difficult at times, probably not very threatening or dangerous at all.

Now, it doesn’t matter if you’ve ever been in a real fight, or ever been attacked by an enraged individual out for blood, I’m sure you can imagine what that must be like. You can almost see his eyes and the intense look on his face. Add to that, the pressure and intention he’s projecting and the smell of him – we can’t forget the smell and feel of him as he moves in on you.

Are you still in “attraction” mode? I bet not. And you’re not even in the real attack. You’re just thinking about it and you’re having an “aversion” response.

How do you think you’re going to feel actually being in the heat of the moment?

Right. Very different than in class or your own personal training sessions where there is no real danger.

If you get the idea of the role and great value that your emotions play in keeping you safe. And, if you learn what role they play in spearheading your body’s natural defense mechanisms, then you can also train to tap into their power and use them as tools for your own protection.

Realizing this will also allow you to tailor and adapt your actual training methods to accomodate, acknowledge, and use your emotions as the valuable tools they are.

Remember, any monkey can learn the moves, but a true expert – a true master – takes advantage of things that most individuals don’t even know about, or don’t know exist. So, do you have to study and use your emotions in your self-defense training? No.

But then, you don’t “have” to breath either. But I’d highly recommend it!

It’s important to know that stress is a major reason people fail with they attempt to sharpen their psychic self-defense skills. Know that stress and anxiety produce failure and disappointment. You must find ways to reduce the stress in your life, and there are many techniques that will help you do just that.

One way to relieve stress and anxiety is to write down those thoughts and feelings, analyze them realistically, and put them in true perspective. The old question, “How important is it, really?” is a useful tool at this phase.

Meditation is the most successful and effective tool to help you improve your psychic self-defense skills. It relieves stress. It helps clear negative energies and thought patterns. It promotes physical and mental healing. And it opens the mind to new and creative thinking. Meditating every day for at least 20 minutes is a powerful way to improve your psychic self-defense skills.

Identifying clear goals will help you succeed because it builds motivation and energy. Working toward those goals can be stressful, but progress brings satisfaction and increased energy. Building psychic self-defense skills is a process, and it requires work and time. The challenges and frustrations along the way are lessons that help us make better progress as our skills continue to improve. Don’t give up. Just keep on doing the best you can.

Use modern technology to help you reach your goals. Research on the Internet to learn what others do to succeed and what others have learned by their failures. Use it to locate resources and tools. Use the Internet and project planning software to help you develop a well thought-out plan with reasonable, achievable steps and milestones. Be as systematic is you can in working toward your goals.

Use meditation to help reach your inner, intuitive knowledge. Before you start meditation, plant the seed of a question in your mind. You’ll be amazed the creative ideas that will come to you during and after your meditation. It will also help you identify the steps you need to take and eliminate barriers to progress.

It’s impossible to eliminate all stress in today’s world, but you can reduce it by building your psychic self-defense skills. Some stresses are healthy because they give us clear objectives and challenges. Think of obstacles as opportunities, and reduce the stress and anxiety in your life.

Working on your psychic self-defense skills is a powerful way to self-development and improving the quality of your life. Using meditation and other techniques, you’ll be better able to identify meaningful goals and the activities and methods to help you achieve them. It won’t be a quick easy fix, but it will provide you with benefits and rewards far beyond the effort you invest.

Self-defense: Using Your Body’s Own Super Self Preservation Modes

Contrary to popular belief, the human body has a set of ready-made, built-in defense modes that can be used in your defense during an attack. Here, I’ll briefly discuss these modes and how you can tap into to win against a dangerous attacker.

To look at most martial arts and self-defense programs, you can easily come to the belief that all you have to do is pickup a bunch of moves or techniques, practice until you can execute them well, and…voila, that’s it. You’re a master or self-defense expert.

But, there is one element that’s routinelY absent from most self defense programs. And that is the utilization of the emotional states as tools for defense.

In the past several years, systems and programs have emerged that focus on what’s referred to as “adrenal response training.” These programs, however, tend to focus on only one of these emotional states, or modes.

There are actually four of these modes that we can find ourselves in when face-to-face with a dangerous assailant. Each state is a natural response to several factors including things like your:

  • 1. Perception of danger or level of threat
  • 2. Personality type
  • 3. Rules and restrictions that your aware of as a part of your job

And others

Each of these modes is more than a mood, state, or condition which we might find ourselves in. They also control, in many ways, how we process information, and even work to free or hinder certain types of body movement.

The Four Response Modes Are:

  • Stable/Confident
  • Adaptable/Defensive
  • Direct/Aggressive
  • Slippery/Evasive

As I said, each of these modes is both a reaction to the current situation, and a strategy for handling a situation in a very unique way. As a general outline, I’ll quickly explain each mode from both a responsive and a proactive perspective.

Please note that the following modes are in no particular order of importance, nor is one better than any of the others. However you may find that one or two feel more comfortable or “natural” for you, each should be seen as an option that can be pressed into service in a self-defense situation. And, as I’ve said time and again, the more options you have in any given situation, the greater your chances for getting the results you want.

Stable/Confident “Earth” Mode.

This defense mode is marked by an overall sense of relaxed calm. You really don’t perceive a threat and you are in firm control of the encounter. Notice that I didn’t say that you were defiant and forced a sense of command. In what I call the “earth-mode,” you use superior positioning and relaxed strength to stop his attacks and direct your strong points against his weak ones, using leverage and crushing pressure to put an end to his plan to hurt you.

Adaptive/Defensive “Water” Mode

Just like the nature of water, you adapt to his movements. You use long-range, defensive angling to pull away from his attacks and , just like an ocean wave crash back in with powerful strikes and kicks to his vulnerable weak targets. This mode is often present when you feel intimidated by his size, strength, or other factors. You naturally want to create time and distance between you and him so that he has to work harder to get at you.

Direct/Aggressive “Fire” Mode.

Either out of fear, anger, or a need to get him first, you move in and direct the fight to the bad guy. In the “fire” mode, you are almost pulled in by a sense of urgency and a desire to get things over with “now”. When I say “aggressive,” I do not necessarily mean destructive, but rather a direct, committed, “go-for-it” attitude which moves you straight in in to meet the assailant before he can really get started. Again, this mode may be triggered by anger just as easily as it could be initiated out of a sense of being cornered and needing to do something right away.

Slippery/Evasive “Wind” Mode.

This mode is marked by a very carefree, open movement with a sense of last-second timing to evade, avoid, and wrap up the opponent with his own attacks. The body position often used with this mode is very open and looks very strange when compared to the more common martial arts and self-defense stances that you often see. This mode could be caused by a complete desire to avoid the situation altogether. It could also be used in a playful, confusing way as you effortlessly slip your attacker’s punches, kicks, and grabs only to catch him with your own attacks from unseen and confusing directions.

Like I said, no one mone mode is better than any other. Each is a natural response that is hardwired inside us and a piece of our overall natural human self-protection mechanisms.

While all of us has leaned toward one or another of these modes as we’ve moved through our lives, and think of that mode as being “only natural” for us. The truth is that, with proper training, each mode can be developed, enhanced, and honed as a very advantageous strategic option for handling a real-world self-defense encounter on front of a very real-world attacker.

Women’s Self-Defense – Why Most Programs Are Wrong

Women’s self defense issues are constantly in the news and a ‘hot’ topic for conversations. In fact, the number one concern from women, especially single women in the dating world, is rape.

It seems that everyone from police officers to karate instructors has his or her own philosophy and theories about the how’s and why’s of self defense for women and girls.

The truth is though, that many of the same techniques and tactics taught to men for self-protection simply will not work for a woman. Why?…

… because attacks perpetrated on women have, at their foundation, certain inherent problems, issues, and conditions that are often very different for men who find themselves in defensive situations. Women have to deal with things that, quite frankly, men don’t.

If this is something you’re really concerned about, you owe it to yourself to do some serious research to get more information about real-world self-defense for women designed around issues specifically related to womens self-defense.

Now, before some of you start rolling your eyes or nodding your head in agreement, this is not a women’s lib issue or anything of the sort. It’s simply the way it is.

What kind of things make self-defense for women different? I’m glad you asked.

Well, for starters, physiologically speaking, there is a 7-to-3 strength ratio between male and female bodies. That means that if you were to stand a man and a woman, having the same height, weight, and build, side-by-side, and all things considered (health, fitness, etc.)…

… the man would still be two-and-a-half times stronger than the woman!

This is not theory or one person’s belief over those of others. It’s scientific fact.

Next, women are more likely to be slapped, grabbed and pinned than punched or kicked. For men, it’s just the opposite. The fact is that, most of us have been conditioned since childhood to act, play, and, yes, fight with each gender very differently. And attackers are no different.

The good news is that more and more women are being drawn to the life-enhancing benefits of the martial arts and basic self-defense programs for increasing their level of self-confidence and overall feelings of safety and security. The not-so-good news is that…

… there is a shortage of:

* Martial arts instructors who understand scientific self-defense, ‘and’ have the necessary life experience to be able to teach from a perspective that shares that experience.

After all…

… if an instructor has never been in a real-world self defense situation themselves, it will make it nearly impossible for them to teach real self defense to anyone – let alone self defense for women. It’s kind of like going to a priest of counselor for marriage counselling who has never been married themselves. They both have information passed on by others but, neither has anyway of expressing that information based on real-word knowledge.

However, there is an over-abundance of…

…so-called self-defense experts who are of the tough-guy, fighter type or the “This is Reality – Deal With it! macho-type.

These people, by their very nature are the “slugger-types” who rely and depend on speed, strength and size to win. Since self defense situations usually involve a bigger, faster, stronger attacker victimizing a smaller, less-prepared target – and, that’sexactly what most women are up against when they’re attacked…

… these instructors, and their “strike-first-and-crush-them-where-they-stand mentalities, are far from being suited, knowledgeable, or able to deliver the necessary lessons needed by women to effectively protect themselves from an assailant intent on dominating them physically.

Other Considerations for Girls and Womens Self Defense

The following is a partial list of some of the other major differences between self defense for women and men. The important thing to remember is that…

… a self-defense situation is very different from a sport or competition-based contest where the individuals are willing participants. They are evenly matched to insure for a “fair fight.” I have been in contests and I have been attacked and I can tell you without a moment’s doubt that…

… there is nothing “fair” or “even” about a real attack. NOTHING! And, once your personal space is invaded by another human being wanting to beat you to your core, you will know what I mean and never, ever, buy into the crap that most of these so-called experts are shovelling.

With that said, please know that I have not said that every self-defense or martial arts instructor is full of it. Just that you must know what you need and make sure that that’s what you’re getting. Remember – you’re not buying a couch that you can take back. A mistake in this area could literally cost you your life!

Here are some other differences between men’s and women’s training that a good program must address:

* Cultural Influences – girls have been taught from a very early age that fighting was not “lady-like.”

Oh my god! What would people think!

* Situational Self-Defense – rape and sexual assault are two of the biggest differences between the genders when it comes to suriviving an attack.

The fact that men are usually dealing with the more obvious situations (muggings and competitive (“oh-yeah! let’s go!”-type fighting), while women, and more and more young girls, are required to deal with subtle tactics like date-rape or being ambushed by a group.

Add to this the strength differential discussed earlier, and you have a very different situation, requiring very different self-protection tactics.

* Incorrect Information – I believe that the majority of teachers and instructors mean well. They aren’t out to con you. It’s just that they have no real experience to go on so they do what everyone does when they don’t know any better…

… they make assumptions that seem logical and rational within their own frame of reference.

The problem is that we’re talking about self-protection here…

… self defense for women…

… girls self-defense. Not…

… vegetable soup. Where, if you make a mistake, you can just dump the pot and start over.

As I said earlier, a mistake in a women’s self-defense situation, in any situation requiring defense against an attack from an assailant bent on damaging you, could be very, very costly indeed.

Kids, Martial Arts, And Self-Defense

Parents instinctively know that the safety of their children is under constant threat. More kids than ever before are abducted and victimized by predators each day. Plus, playground bullies, older children, and others prey upon the young, thinking them defenseless. By enrolling your child into martial arts classes, you can equip them with the skills to ward off an attack or evade it altogether.

In this article, I’ll describe how learning karate, judo, kung-fu, and other styles can help your child feel more confident, approach potentially threatening situations thoughtfully, and ultimately preserve his or her safety. While most parents would prefer not to think about their children needing to defend themselves against others, it is very real possibility.

A Persistent Threat

Long ago, children were seldom victimized or abducted; and it was practically unimaginable in small towns. Times have changed. In 2002, over 58,000 children were kidnapped by non-family members. What’s more, the number of cases reported in communities with sparse populations has escalated. In effect, every child, regardless of location, is susceptible to the threat of predators.

Young kids are also vulnerable to older children. They can easily – and without reasonable justification – become victims of bullying or physical abuse. Sometimes, the circumstances can swing wildly out of control, leading to injury or worse. Parents are understandably concerned and are becoming increasingly aware that they need to take preventative measures.

Kids’ Self-Defense Through Martial Arts

Kids martial arts classes are not designed to train children to fight. Instead, they focus on developing a number of mental and physical skills that provide lifelong value. Kids learn to concentrate more effectively and think more clearly. They also learn the value of respect and emotional restraint. The training will also include self-defense strategies that your child can use to ward off threats.

One of the most important elements in kids martial arts classes (in the context of self-defense) is the ability to disengage from situations that might lead to violent confrontation. In many cases, a child can find himself embroiled in circumstances that could have otherwise been avoided. Learning the martial arts can help a child identify and avoid those circumstances.

Styles Of Kids Martial Arts

Parents have a number of martial arts styles from which they can choose. Some styles, like karate, are more aggressive than others. For example, aikido focuses on techniques that help students disable an attacker without actually fighting them. It emphasizes throwing moves rather than striking. On the other hand, karate and kung-fu involve a number of striking tactics; both approach self-defense from a far more aggressive perspective. Judo, like aikido, stresses the development of physical and mental control; the style involves very few striking moves.

Finding A Dojo

Parents who are interested in exploring martial arts classes for their child should visit a few training facilities in their area. They should speak with the instructors and ask about each dojo’s respective philosophy. They should also observe a few classes to become familiar with each instructor’s training style. In the end, your child needs to develop the necessary physical and mental discipline to help ensure their safety. That includes learning techniques of self-defense. The Benefits of Tai Chi and Internal Martial Arts for Self-defense: Part 1 of 2

Internal Martial arts such as Tai Chi, or Ba Gua can be extremely effective for self defense if trained correctly. There are a few strategic principles in Chinese internal Martial Arts that can provide a tactical advantage in melee combat. I will outline them in the following sections: Body Alignment and Changing, Friction and Sensitivity, Timing, Initiative (these last two I will explain in part two of this article). Body Alignment / Posture and Body Changing

The first thing about internal chinese martial arts like Tai Chi and Ba Gua is that they are based off of the chinese system of medicine. This system has been well aware of things that chiropractors and sports physiotherapists are just starting to learn about the human nervous system and spinal cord, meditative benefits, and muscle/tendon functional excellence. Like gymnasts and dancers, internal arts practitioners do difficult and challenging exercises, drills, and forms in order to literally change their body’s metabolism, balance, structure, tendon strength, speed and flexibility. The more serious one is with their body changing training, the more results they will see. Doing Tai Chi once per week without the requisite secrets is not good enough. At first this training is extremely difficult, just as jogging is extremely difficult for the beginner. But after years of practice, the internal martial artist’s body starts to change, and they start to see the health and martial benefits as they begin to move as a functional unit and cease using “awkward force”. They also get damaged less often in hard martial arts sparring. This body changing also includes tendon conditioning, thus making an internal artist “seem” stronger as they move as a more functional unit. Tendons are as strong as steel. If you can learn to use them, and to strengthen them, then you will move as a more functional and solid (yet fluid) unit.

Friction and Sensitivity

Another key aspect in internal arts like Tai Chi, or Ba Gua (Cheng Sher and Magui), is friction, or what is sometimes called sticky hands. With this body changing, and two person “push”, “search”, or “sticky” hands practice, practitioners become more sensitive to the movements of others, and by using this sensitivity, internal martial artists can use a foe’s force against them by placing them off balance. And by using friction, the practitioner can deliver more kinetic energy per second than a straight punch. All boxers know that more friction means more damage, so too does this apply to throws and arm drags.
